The tradition of sport fishing is in decline in Quebec and access to waterways is increasingly limited for a progressively urban population. Gone are the days when the eldest
introduced the youngest to fishing in the ponds and streams near the family home.
At the fishing stations of our ponds, children can learn to fish and, along with their families, discover the ways of our plants and animals. In both summer and winter, children
are introduced by our guides to fishing in ponds using bait and lure. With the rods provided, they can try out what they’ve learned for themselves. And they get to take
home their catch!
When children are taught to fish, they are not only ensuring that traditions live on. They also develop coordination, dexterity, and powers of observation of the natural world.
Young people engaged in this sport discover and begin to understand aquatic ecosystems. In so doing they become aware of the need to protect these habitats. They also learn responsibility
and self-reliance in relation to the world around them and to other fishermen.
